Discovering Self-Compassion: The Power of Daily Practice

In a groundbreaking study, researchers investigated the transformative effects of daily micropractice on self-compassion, mindfulness, and psychopathology among college students. This pre-registered trial aimed to assess the efficacy of a single-session intervention utilizing self-compassionate touch for just 20 seconds a day.

Benefits of self-compassion routine

Participants (N = 135) were randomly assigned to either the self-compassionate touch intervention group or an active control group. Over the course of one month, participants diligently practiced their assigned intervention and completed assessments at baseline and one-month follow-up.

While intention-to-treat analyses initially yielded no significant effects, per-protocol analyses revealed promising outcomes. Among those who adhered to the daily practice for over 28 times, self-compassionate touch was associated with significant increases in self-compassion and reductions in stress and psychopathology.

Exploratory analyses further supported these findings, suggesting that more frequent engagement with self-compassionate touch led to enhanced outcomes compared to the active control group. These results highlight the potential of daily micro practices in augmenting single-session interventions and providing accessible support for psychological well-being.

The implications of this study extend beyond the college setting, offering valuable insights into the role of self-compassion and mindfulness in promoting mental health. Incorporating daily micro practices into routine self-care routines may offer a simple yet effective strategy for cultivating self-compassion and alleviating psychological distress.
